Tailoring Leveling Guide

Primary profession1-300

Overview

Tailors sew cloth armor and bags. Their raw material, cloth, drops from humanoid enemies, so no gathering profession is required and both slots stay free. A popular combination is Enchanting: what you sew becomes dust and essences.

Beta build: the skill thresholds on this page were checked against the Forever beta client. Reagents and thresholds can still move before release, and a recipe that has gone yellow no longer gives a point on every craft, so buy a small margin.
  • Bolts first: every tier starts by turning cloth into bolts. Bolts stop giving points quickly, yet later steps consume them all, so the route tells you how many to prepare in total.
  • Mageweave Cloth only drops from enemies around level 40 and above. On the beta it is scarce and expensive, so each Mageweave step comes with a fallback.
  • Vendor goods: thread (Coarse, Fine, Silken, Heavy Silken) and dyes are sold by the Tailoring Supply vendor near the trainer. Tirisfal Glades has none: Undead buy Coarse Thread from Abigail Shiel in Brill.
  • Elixir of Wisdom is needed for one step (125-140). Buy it or ask an Alchemist; the Alchemy route produces 30 of them.
  • Camp items: Faction Banner at skill 20 (1 Bolt of Linen Cloth, 1 Coarse Thread) gives a Spirit buff to your own faction at a campfire. Spinning Wheel (skill 140: 2 Simple Wood, 5 Bolt of Silk Cloth, 3 Fine Thread) and Loom (skill 300) are crafting stations.

Journeyman (55-125)

Learn Journeyman before the wool bolts: a good streak takes you past 75, and points are lost if the cap is still there.

SkillCraftMaterials
55-8045× Bolt of Woolen ClothPoints slow down in the 70s. Craft all 45 regardless.135 Wool Cloth
80-9522× Woolen CapeYellow for the whole range.22 Bolt of Woolen Cloth
22 Fine Thread
95-1005× Double-stitched Woolen Shoulders15 Bolt of Woolen Cloth
10 Fine Thread
100-12040× Bolt of Silk ClothThe route uses 176 silk bolts (704 Silk Cloth) up to 190, so you can prepare them all now.160 Silk Cloth
120-1258× Double-stitched Woolen ShouldersYellow by now.24 Bolt of Woolen Cloth
16 Fine Thread

The capes and shoulders use 61 wool bolts, 16 more than the 45 that gave points: weave the missing ones (48 Wool Cloth) when you need them. If you intend to stop at 150 on the beta, skip the silk bolts and make 29 shoulders from 100 to 125 instead (87 Bolt of Woolen Cloth, 58 Fine Thread).

Expert (125-225)

SkillCraftMaterials
125-14020× Gloves of MeditationYellow from the start: a few more than 20 may be needed.80 Bolt of Woolen Cloth
60 Fine Thread
20 Elixir of Wisdom

150-17020× Crimson Silk Vest80 Bolt of Silk Cloth
40 Red Dye
40 Fine Thread
170-19024× Crimson Silk PantaloonsYellow from 180: the last ten points take about 14 crafts.96 Bolt of Silk Cloth
48 Red Dye
48 Silken Thread
190-21538× Black Mageweave GlovesYellow from 195 and green near the end, so expect a few more.76 Bolt of Mageweave
76 Heavy Silken Thread
215-22526× Mageweave BagThe final five points are slow; the bags sell or fill your bank.104 Bolt of Mageweave
52 Silken Thread

On the beta, ready-made Bolt of Mageweave on the Auction House is often cheaper than the cloth itself.

Artisan (225-300)

Not played yet: the beta level cap stops characters short of Artisan, so this range rests on the skill thresholds stored in the client, not on a tested run. Forever shifted many thresholds compared with Classic, so a Classic Era route is not a safe substitute. Check this part again at launch.

Train Artisan at skill 200 and level 35 with Daryl Stack (Tarren Mill, Horde) or Timothy Worthington (Theramore Isle, Alliance). Tailoring is the profession whose thresholds moved the most: many patterns go grey 25 to 45 points earlier than in Classic. A 225-300 route will be added here once it has been played on live servers.
